ESolar Inc. of Pasadena signed an agreement Friday to build a series of solar thermal power plants in China with a total capacity of 2,000 megawatts, in one of the largest renewable energy deals of its kind. The picture shows Andasol, the concentrating power plant in Granada, Spain.

China’s plans to build 2,000 megawatts of solar thermal power using technology from a California company, eSolar, will also include the construction of biomass power plants to generate electricity when the sun sets.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the Ministry of Economic Affairs will grant the majority of the subsidies to pilot projects for biorefining and further development of fermentation techniques, while a smaller amount will go to projects relating to the development of algae into biofuel.

TMO’s high-temperature fermentation process boasts high efficiencies and fast conversion rates. It is capable of utilising all of the sugars, including complex longer-chain forms. At the core of the TMO process is a talented, heat-loving bacterium (a thermophile) that is able to grow at high temperatures (60°C–70°C). The bacterium, TM242, was developed from a wild type found on a compost heap and, as such, has an unusually broad appetite for biomass-derived sugars, rapidly converting them into cellulosic bioethanol. By contrast to conventional batch methods at existing ethanol plants, this allows a continuous production process which requires relatively mild pre-treatment and simple hydrolysis steps prior to rapid fermentation.
