Algerian gas – still a key part of southern Europe's energy mix

As a reliable supplier of natural gas – on which some Southern European countries, particularly Spain and Italy, have grown heavily dependent – Algeria has a long-established position as Europe’s second largest external supplier of natural gas. But there have been some dramatic events in Algeria in the last few months. The sacking of long time energy minister Chakib Khelil and the dismissal of the Sonatrach CEO and several top managers of the national company on corruption allegations coincide with an aggressively pursued export programme now carried out at a time that European markets are awash with natural gas.
