Stramproy Green Coal will supply Essent Trading biocoal during a undisclosed number of years. Biocoal is a new biofuel that is suitable to be co-fired in energy plants. First deliveries are expected to start end of this year.
Biocoal is torrefacted woody biomass and has the characteristics of fossil coal. Torrefaction is a pre-treatment process in which the woody biomass is heated to 300˚C and gets better fuel qualities for combustion and gasification. All different compositions and properties of biomass make it hard to be used for energy generation. Torrefaction makes this possible and improves the grindability of the biomass and increases the energy density typically to 15-18.5 GJ/m3.
The production unit is based in Steenwijk and will be highly energy efficient because the heat (>60%) and will be used to generate electricity.
