Shell doubles investments in second generation biofuel producer Codexis Inc.

Shell will invest approximately 419 million euro to finance research at Codexis. This doubles the investments in the company that develops enzymes that support the conversion process of biomass tissue from f.i. grass into sugars and ultimately biodiesel and ethanol. Shell has 20% of the shares and Chevron 5%.
The competition of Shell is also active. For example Exxon Mobil will invest 430 million euro in the next six years in Synthetic Genomics Inc. This company researches the efficient production of biofuels from algae’s.
Chevron cooperates with Mascoma Corp to research biofuels made from plants; BP has a joint venture with Verenium Corp to build a plant for biofuels in Florida.
